SADEWA For Hydrometeorological Disaster Mitigation

The territory of Indonesia as a maritime continent with thousands of islands is a unique and complex area from a scientific and atmospheric perspective. Being in the equatorial region and surrounded by oceans encourages the upward flow of air which causes convective and rain. So that a lot of rain falls, including in steep areas that are prone to causing landslides and flooding for flatter areas. This is as explained by the Head of the LAPAN Center for Atmospheric Science and Technology, Didi Satiadi, through a virtual presentation on the Knowledge sharing DSS for Hydrometeorological Disaster Mitigation Thursday (5/11).


The Indonesian region is the largest producer of clouds and rain in the world. According to Didi, rainfall in Indonesia has a self-regulated critical characteristic. Thus, it causes nearly 80% of the rain that is reduced in 20% of events. Strictly speaking, we need to be aware of extreme events that can cause hydrometeorological disasters whose frequency is more frequent than geological disasters.

LAPAN, in this case PSTA, added Didi, contributed through monitoring and predicting atmospheric conditions that could potentially cause disasters. As an R&D institution, he added, PSTA-LAPAN supports government efforts through related ministries / institutions through research and development activities called the Decission Support System (DSS) or decision support systems.

Every ministry / institution has an obligation to public safety, said Didi, by providing early warning and also mitigating against hydrometeorogic disasters. With regard to disasters, there are several things that can be done, Didi explained, avoiding disasters, then mitigating or reducing the impact of disasters, controlling impacts, and moving disaster risks to other places.

PSTA-LAPAN, said Didi, provides support to related ministries and operational agencies to support development performance in various sectors such as agriculture, energy, transportation, environment, health, including disaster.

Sattelite-based Disaster Early Warning System or so-called SADEWA, said Doctoral graduate of Physics-University Of Wales Aberystwyth, United Kingdom, is a product of PSTA-LAPAN's R&D in the form of DSS, especially to support the management of hydrometeorological disaster risk, of course by the relevant authorities. SADEWA, explained Didi, functions to monitor in real time and predict extreme rain events that have the potential to cause floods and landslides throughout Indonesia with a spatial resolution of about 5 km to the next 3 days, Didi concluded.

Knowledge sharing SADEWA DSS for Hydrometeorological Disaster Mitigation is a series of Focus Group Discussion activities on Atmospheric Science about Technology, Environment and Latest Climate Series 9 (SATELIT # 9). This activity was held in collaboration with the Center for Atmospheric Science and Technology with the Pontianak Space and Atmospheric Observation Center. Held in virtual and face-to-face meetings with class room method at BPAA Pontianak. The activity was attended by 10 participants from the Regional Disaster Management Agency of Singkawang City. Deputy for Space and Atmospheric Sciences-LAPAN, Halimurrahman, was present to open the event.

One of the needs for disaster management, explained Halimurrahman, is how to get warnings from reliable data and information before an extreme event occurs. Early warning of disasters, said Halimurrahman, is important to support disaster management at BPBD. "SADEWA is an R&D product that can help users make disaster decisions," Halimurrahman concluded.
