The emergence of North Cyclones Reduces Rain in Indonesia

Successive cyclones Goni and Atsani in the northern hemisphere over the past week have dampened the effect of La Niña in Indonesian territory. The impact especially for western Indonesia is a reduction in rainfall.

"The chances of extreme rain are getting smaller," said Erma Yulihastin, a climatology researcher from the Center for Atmospheric Science and Technology of the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) Erma Yulihastin, Saturday, November 7, 2020.

According to him, through a written statement, the cyclone storms of Goni and Atsani, which formed intensively in the Pacific Ocean around the Philippines, shifted the convergence area that should have been in Indonesian territory to the north.

The two storms, which have a direction of movement in an adjacent area, have an effect on blocking the Asian monsoon winds from the north so that they cannot enter the southern region of Indonesia. As a result, the monsoon wind movement pattern from the north is disrupted and the intensity and frequency of diurnal or daily rain in a number of western and central regions of Indonesia has decreased.


In addition, Goni and Atsani storms also suppressed convective cloud activity and reduced humidity so that the cumulus clouds that formed before noon failed to bring rain down. This makes a number of areas in western Indonesia currently experiencing reduced rainfall. "Along with the decay of Goni in Vietnam and the weakening of Hurricane Atsani in Taiwan," said Erma.

Although the two storms disintegrated, the seed of a cyclone named 82W resurfaced in the Pacific Ocean near the east of the Philippines. This cyclone seed is expected to form into a tropical cyclone in less than 24 hours.

As before, the formation of this new storm will also affect strong winds and cause sporadic rains in eastern Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Ternate, Maluku and western Papua.

However, in general, said Erma, Indonesia will experience less rain. This reduction in rainfall also shows that the presence of cyclone storms in the north has reduced the extreme risk of increased rainfall caused by moderate La Niña conditions.

By holding back and weakening the Asian monsoon, the storm has also minimized the potential for the formation of a strong northern wind flow across the equator, known as the CENS phenomenon. This condition reduces the chances of extreme rain occurring.

However, some areas on the east coast of Sumatra and West Kalimantan need to be aware of the potential for local and sporadic formation of strong winds and heavy rains. Similar conditions can also occur in parts of the northern coast of Java, which experience heavy rains in a short time due to the influence of local conditions.
