Lapan Researchers Appeal to Residents to Be Alert to the Impact of the La Nina Phenomenon

A researcher on the dynamics of the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN), Noersomadi, explained that Indonesia's rainfall is influenced by various phenomena in the atmosphere, both on a global and local scale.

Among these global phenomena, one of which is warming or cooling of sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, known as El Nino and La Nina.

According to Noersomadi, both are terms for global climate anomalies that can affect rainfall in Indonesia. El Nino for a warm phase in the Pacific which has an impact on reducing rainfall in Indonesia. On the other hand, La Nina is a cold phase in the Pacific which has an effect on increasing rainfall in Indonesia.

"These two phenomena must be continuously monitored and predicted because they have a significant impact on weather and climate dynamics in Indonesia," he said, according to information received by Liputan6.com, Tuesday (20/10/2020).

At present, Noersomadi continued, based on observational data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there was a decrease in sea surface temperature in the Pacific Ocean, which tended to point to La Nina conditions. In this condition, residents in locations prone to flooding and landslides need to increase their awareness, because rain can fall with high intensity.

Noersomadi admitted, the Center for Atmospheric Science and Technology (PSTA - LAPAN) continues to monitor the condition of water vapor or cloud growth, which is continuously updated every day via satellite and shows an increase over the past month.

"Indonesia needs to increase awareness of potential hydrometeorological disasters in the form of floods and landslides that can occur in a number of areas," said Noersomadi.

Noersomadi said that the potential for increased rainfall is expected to attract the attention of stakeholders in various sectors for disaster mitigation purposes in the future.
