Universitas Darussalam Gontor Studying Informatics at PSTA LAPAN

Bandung, Tuesday, February 12, 2019, as many as 30 students and 6 lecturers from the Informatics Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Darussalam (UNIDA) visited PSTA LAPAN. The student who came was the first generation to become the beginning of the establishment of the UNIDA Gontor women's campus, in the new study program opened in 2018. The student was undergoing lectures in the second semester of Informatics Engineering and visiting with the aim of gathering and learning about informatics applications at PSTA LAPAN. 

The arrival of Gontor's UNIDA community was warmly welcomed by Mr. Lilik Slamet, as the head of the LTA PSTA dissemination field. In his remarks, Mr. Lilik welcomed and gave a brief explanation of the position of PSTA in the structure of the LAPAN institution.

The next event was continued by Mr. Atep Radiana, explaining the Position of LAPAN, which was regulated by Presidential Regulation number 49, where LAPAN was responsible for the president through the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti). He also said about the position of PSTA in LAPAN, location of the LAPAN observation station, main tasks and functions, vision and mission, seven main programs of LAPAN and four main competencies of LAPAN. The four competencies of LAPAN are explained through each deputy and its products. Then, an explanation of the PSTA LAPAN Decision Support System (DSS) was carried out in more detail. The name of the DSS was chosen deliberately to take the name of the puppet so that it is easily remembered by the public.

Participants then listened to an explanation of the Informatics Application in the Atmospheric Science and Technology Center by Ms. Nani Cholianawati. The material begins with an explanation of the atmosphere which is the blanket of the earth, and has a major role in regulating the temperature on earth. There are various sciences regarding the atmosphere, including the fields of scientific meteorology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, informatics engineering and other fields of science. The integration of various fields of science is very important to use, one of which, forecasting weather and climate parameters through certain instruments, models and computational science. All fields of science must collaborate to conduct research.

There are 5 research groups in PSTA with different products and fields of science. The 5 groups are Atmospheric-Maritime Research Group, Potential Hydrometeorological Disasters, Climate Change, Atmospheric Environment and Atmospheric Technology. As a means of supporting research activities, there are 5 laboratories namely computing, chemistry, electronics, programs, and observation. The products of each group are represented in each Decision Support System (DSS). DSS is a product used by decision makers. Where the role of PSTA is as a research and development institution that provides information, while the decision makers make policies related to that information. The five DSS products also illustrate PSTA LAPAN's work in carrying out monitoring and prediction tasks, with the support of BISMA (Indonesian Atmospheric Database). The five DSS products are:

  1. SADEWA, monitoring and forecasts relating to rainfall
  2. SEMAR, monitoring and forecasting related to shipping safety and fish production potential 
  3. SRIKANDI, monitoring and forecasting relating to air quality conditions
  4. SANTANU, only radar-based spatial rainfall monitoring
  5. SRIRAMA, long-term climate predictions (50 to 100 years ahead)

 Ms. Nani Cholinawati said that the future trend regarding Big Earth Data Science will always increase with increasingly varied data. As an illustration of the estate, a total of 90% of the data currently available has only been collected in the past 2 years. This trend must be supported by related infrastructure. The basic reason is that data collected in large quantities (up to petabytes) is used to produce information / knowledge that is only a few kilobytes in size. So that it can be said that increasing information can be linear with our ability to use big data. In the future, data mining and machine learning are very important things to learn.

After delivering the material, there was a question and answer session that was enthusiastically welcomed by the participants. Questions about the differences between LAPAN and BMKG, LAPAN-BMKG cooperation, global warming, LAPAN satellite products, and the development of 5G signals. After this session ended, the event was officially closed by Mr. Lilik Slamet S, then followed by a visit in the Media Center PSTA room. At the PSTA, ASTINA media center, the participants were guided by Mr. Haries Satyawardhana by trying to see the DSS product display and interpreting the information contained within it.
