Mathematics Students FMIPA UNISBA Learns Atmospheric and Space Science at LAPAN Bandung

Bandung - PSTA & Pussainsa (Tuesday, January 22, 2019), as many as 97 students of the Mathematics study program from 3 classes (2016, 2017, and 2018) along with 4 accompanying lecturers at the Islamic University of Bandung (UNISBA) visited the LAPAN Bandung office. The visit, which was first held by UNISBA, was explained by the Head of the Mathematics Study Program, intended for the purpose of industrial visits. Students of class 2018 are required to hold industry visits. 2017 class students make industrial visits in order to get a place for agencies to do student work practices (PKL), while the 2016 class is oriented to get final assignments.

Djoko Trianas as PPID PSTA stated that both PSTA and Pusainsa have been designated as offices with WBK zones (corruption free areas) so that each visit is not subject to levies or free. In addition, the visit was different from the student visit to LAPAN Bandung in general, where the host of the visit was a UNISBA student himself. The program began with the reading of the holy verses of the Koran by students followed by the recitation of the sari.

The event continued with remarks from LAPAN, represented by the Head of Section (KaBag) of the Space Science Administration, Nurkhamdani. Moving on to the core program, the presentation of LAPAN's profile by PPID Pusainsa, Ferdhy and continued with material related to space weather: the causes and effects of Pusainsa researcher Santi Suliatiani. It was explained that space weather is caused by the dynamics of the sun which is the center of the solar system, where the earth is a member of the solar system. In each 11 year period there is a solar cycle, where the sun is at the peak of activity with CME (Corona Mass Ejection) or a corona surge that can induce the magnetosphere and ionosphere. The impact of CME is on communication and information and satellite-based positions.

The third speaker who presented the results of the PSTA R & D in the form of a decision support system (DSS) such as SADEWA, SRIRAMA, SRIKANDI, SANTANU, and SEMAR as well as atmospheric modeling was the Head of the PSTA Dissemination Division, Lilik Slamet Supriatin. It was explained that modeling is the making of simplification of a system so that when talking about modeling the atmosphere of Indonesia, it is the creation and simplification of the equatorial atmosphere system and the unique Indonesian maritime continent. This peculiarity is due to Indonesia which is located in the equator and is an archipelagic country that is different from other countries located in the same climate region as equador in the Americas or Congo on the African continent. The model can be divided into 2 namely static and dynamic. Static modeling such as the form of mathematical equations and regression equations. Regression equations function for predictions. While dynamic modeling will be in the form of loops (cycles), where the output in the first iteration can be input to the next iteration and so on.

The scientific visit of UNISBA received in the Sun Room Building 1, 3rd floor ended with a discussion between students, supervisors, and speakers. In the first term questions were opened for 3 people. From the discussion forum, questions such as the difference between PSTA and BMKG revealed how LAPAN answers the theory that the earth is flat, why space activities in Indonesia are less developed compared to other countries, and opinions suggest that at present the atmosphere has been depleted. All questions from students can be answered by the resource person, such as the difference between PSTA and BMKG. Lilik Slamet Supriatin replied that BMKG is an operational agency that informs the weather and climate conditions and forecasts, while PSTA is a R & D agency related to the atmosphere and its utilization. The weather information supplied by the BMKG is limited to the provincial capital, while the PSTA with SADEWA can inform the weather at a higher spatial resolution of 50 km (equivalent to the village administration area) and weather predictions for the next 3 days. In tripartite relations between R & D, industry and users, the position of BMKG is as a user (user) of R & D products produced by PSTA, while the industry here is as a producer that increases the products of PSTA R & D.

Answering about the flat Earth theory question, Santi Suliatiani replied that the theory was wrong and it can be proved why the rainbow is curved in the sky? That is because the earth is round. Lilik Slamet also tried to answer space activities in Indonesia which was felt to be a bit late. This is because space activities are high cost (high capital), high risk (high risk of danger), and high tech (high technology). For example rocket technology is the technology of the nation's own children, meaning that no one country will divulge the secret of rocket technology to other countries. This is because rocket technology has two sides of a currency, namely rockets for defense and rockets for research. Rockets for the military can be identified with missile technology, which if a country has mastered the technology, then its neighbors fear that the rocket technology will be misused for missiles that could threaten the security of a country.

The last question is related to the depleted atmospheric conditions. Lilik Slamet Supriatin again replied that the atmosphere, especially the concentration of ozone in the stratosphere, was decreasing. The term ozone hole is a term intended to show the diminishing ozone concentration in the second layer of the Earth's atmosphere, the stratosphere. In contrast to the ozone concentration, the CO2 concentration even increases in the atmosphere. The scientific visit of Unisba students ended with a visit to the media center ASTINA owned by PSTA and a media center for the Space Science Center called SWIFT.
