With AIS, Fishermen Helped Increase Their Snapshots

Weather related information provided by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to fishermen was integrated with the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN) to increase fishing catches when fishing.

In fact, with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) that utilizes satellites, fishermen will be given information on the location of many fish.

The Head of BMKG, Prof. Dwikorita Karnawati said, in the activity titled Fisherman Field School (SLN), in the future the fishermen would know the right position to go to sea.

These positions include good weather and spots that contain lots of fish to increase fisherman productivity.

That is because, from the information released by his party, it will be integrated with information from LAPAN related to the right catchment area for fishermen. "With this (SLN), fishermen know the safe position and the position of many fish anywhere. So there is no need to think about it anymore and the productivity of fishermen can increase," he said, Monday (08/13/2018).

Meanwhile, Head of the LAPAN Atmospheric Science and Technology Center (PSTA), Halimurrahman, said that Lapan departed from Law 21 of 2013 concerning space. So that the integration of information from BMKG can be utilized with space to improve the economy of the community, in this case fishermen. "We support the satellite-based fishing ground potential (fishing ground), and space in this case is a satellite. So with 8a2 satellites can find out the position of the ship that has been installed by AIS to look for spots (lots of fish) and avoid bad weather," he said.

He revealed, ships that have a weight above 30 gross tons must be installed by AIS.

Regarding its operation, it will coordinate with Shahbandar as a monitor of ships who want to go to sea and as parties who contact the fishermen if they get information.

"The benefit of this AIS is that the ship can be monitored by Shahbandar, and if later there is a notification of the weather, the port's position is already known to continue to inform fishermen through the Agatlr radio community network to avoid areas that have bad weather," he said.

Responding to this, the Regional Secretariat of Government and People's Welfare (Kesra) of the Regional Secretariat of Yogyakarta, Sulistyo welcomed the SLN held by BMKG.

He also hoped that after the training in the future fishermen could increase their productivity.

"Fishermen who get this training are expected to provide counseling to other fishermen. Because the potential in the south sea is a lot of pleasure, and if the training results are maximally utilized by fishermen, it can certainly increase their productivity," he said.
