BROMINE MONOXIDE AND OZONE CORRELATION IN INDONESIA BASED ON AURA-MLS SATELLITE OBSERVATION

ABSTRACT

Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) is part of the Earth Observing System (EOS) placed on NASA's AURA satellite that was launched on July 15, 2004 and effectively produce data results of global observations from September 2004 until today. MLS measure vertical profiles of ozone and other atmospheric chemical components with a more accurate. Determination of Bromine Monoxide (BrO) and Ozone vertical profiles in Indonesia has been done based on atmospheric observations by using Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) instrument on board the AURA satellite. The correlation between ozone and BrO was determined by using Pearson Correlation method. The data used were the vertical profile of BrO and Ozone over Indonesian region in 2005-2010. The analysis showed that monthly variation of ozone vertical profiles in Indonesia in 2005-2010 was generally constant below 100 hPa and rising from 100 hPa to 0.1 hPa (from the lower stratosphere to the upper stratosphere) and then decreasing with a maximum value in the middle stratosphere at a pressure of 10 hPa where ozone mixing ratio occured between 8000 to 11000 ppbv (8 to 11 ppmv). The minimum ozone value occur in the troposphere above the altitude of 0.01 hPa. The analysis also showed that the peak of BrO profile occured at a pressure of 14 hPa with a concentration range between 0.005 to 0.04 ppbv. BrO highest peak concentration occurred in February 2006-2008 and the lowest peak occurred in May 2006 to 2008 with a concentration of 0.02 ppbv. Ozone and BrO correlation showed value -0.218. Negative correlation indicated high BrO concentration caused a decrease in the concentration of ozone over the Indonesia’s stratosphere layer.
