ANALYSIS OF FURUNO MARINE RADAR 1932 MARK-2 CAPABILITY TO OBSERVE RAIN RATE

Abstract

Indonesia has many areas prone to floods and landslide so that an early warning system to such disasters is required. The research analyzed the capability of Furuno marine radar 1932 Mark-2 as a low cost alternative solution to weather radar by analyzing its specification followed by experiment and test of its weakness as a disaster early warning system instrument through development of acquisition system and radar signal processing. According to the specification, its radar scanner unit is compatible for rain detection but need volume correction for wide vertical beam width. The display unit is not compatible because its plotter is monochrome and its clutter is actually rain. Experiment and test results have proved that the radar was able to detect rainfall movement with reflectivity values observed between 15-30 dBZ. Rain gauge measurement confirmed that the reflectivity of 30 dBZ was rain with rate of 5.4 mmh-1. Relation between detected Z and R did not match with Marshall Palmer equation, as reflectivity value of 30 DBZ will produce rainfall of 2.7 mmh-1. Therefore, it is necessary to find the representing Z and R relation by calibrating its reflectivity using rain gauge measurement data.
